I CORINTHIANS

By: Edith Shelton

Ch 1: Greeting and thanksgiving
Dissensions - Chloe's people - Paul/Apollos/Cephas/Christ Paul baptized only Crispus and Gaius, and household of Stephanas
Cross - folly to perishing, power of God to those being saved Christ crucified - stumbling-block to Jews; folly to Gentiles
Christ - our wisdom, our righteousness, consecration, redemption

Ch 2: Christ crucified - not in words of wisdom but in demonstration of Spirit and power - your faith rest in power of God
Secret and hidden wisdom of God - "...no eye has seen... what God has prepared for those who love him, God has revealed to us..."
We have received Spirit from God to understand gifts from God.
Unspiritual man does not receive gifts of Spirit of God -- folly to him... spiritually discerned... But we have mind of Christ.

Ch 3: Must address you as babes in Christ, men of flesh, feed with milk... jealousy and strife...are you not of the flesh
What is Apollos? Paul? Servants... I planted, A watered, God gave the increase. We are fellow workmen for God
I laid a foundation, another man building...no found. than Jesus Christ
You are God's temple... Let no one boast of men. For all things are yours -- Paul, Apollos, Cephas, world, life, death, present, future..and you are Christ's.

Ch 4: We are servants of Christ stewards of mysteries of God
Required of stewards that they be found trustworthy
Not judged of others, nor judge myself--Lord who judges
Apostles last of all...spectacle to the world...fools for Christ's sake
I sent to you Timothy...to remind you of my ways in Christ
For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. v.20

Ch 5: Immorality - man living with father's wife
Let him be removed from among you
Little leaven ferments whole lump of dough...Cleanse out old leaven
7b,8 For Christ our paschal lamb has been sacrificed
Let us, therefore, celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Cites former letter -- Not to associate with immoral men... who bears the name of brother. You judge those inside church.

Ch 6: Going to law against brother
No man wise enough to decide?
Unrighteous will not inherit kingdom of God...And such were some of you.
But you were washed, you were consecrated, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
All things lawful, not all helpful...will not be enslaved by anything
Your bodies members of Christ...not make them members of prostitute
Shun immorality...sin against own body
"You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

Ch 7: "Now concerning the matters about which you wrote."
husband and wife - conjugal rights
unmarried - better to stay single, o.k. to marry
Married - not to separate or divorce
unbelieving spouse...
Lead life which God has assigned -- circumcised, slave/free Unmarried - impending distress - remain unmarried unmarried please Lord, married please wife/husband

Ch 8: Food offered to idols--we have knowledge, but must operate by love
Idol has no real existence - many "gods" but only one God
Not all know this
Some eat as though idol real - conscience defiled
Man of knowledge at idol table, weak destroyed

Ch 9: We have right to take wife -- Barnabas and I as other aposltes and brothers of Lord and Cephas
Law says not muzzle oxen treading out grain - for oxen?
Those who serve at altar share in sacrificial offerings
Those who proclaim gospel should get living from gospel
I have made no use of any of these rights
"I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel..."
All runners compete - one wins prize
So run that you may obtain it.

Ch 10: Fathers in wilderness - all same privileges
Nevertheless, with most God displeased
Do not desire evil; do not be idolaters as some of them were happened as warning--written for our instruction "God is faithful...will not allow you to be tempted beyond strength...will provide way of escape..."
Cup of blessing which we bless...participation in blood of Christ Bread which we break...participation in body of Christ Food offered to idols anything? No--but offered to demons "All things are lawful" - not all helpful, not all build up Eat what is offered - don't question BUT if told...don't eat "So, whether you eat or drink...do all to the glory of God"

Ch 11: Head of man is Christ; head of woman is husband...head uncovered When you assemble, divisions among you.
Lord's supper - not eat together
For I received from the Lord...Lord Jesus...took bread..gave thanks and said "This is my body which is broken for you...This cup is the new covenant in my blood..."
Whoever eats or drinks in unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment

Ch 12: Concerning spiritual gifts - varieties of gifts, service, working Spirit inspires, apportions
Body is many members - need each other
You are body of Christ and members of it
God has appointed: apostles - prophets - teachers - workers of miracles - healers - helpers - administrators - ...tongues

Ch 13: More excellent way - love
How love acts (and doesn't act)
Love never ends Now see in glass darkly, then face to face - then understand fully

Ch 14: Make love your aim - and desire spiritual gifts, esp. prophecy
speak in tongues, speak to God, edify self
prophecy edifies the church
Strive to excel in building up church
If speaking in tongue, pray for power to interpret
When you assemble: hymn, lesson, revelation, tongue, interpretation
Women keep silent, ask husbands at home (?)

Ch 15: Resurrection chapter
Gospel - Christ died for our sins, buried, raised third day
If Christ not raised, preaching in vain and faith is in vain
v.20-22 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Last enemy to be destroyed is death.
How are dead raised? - imperishable, glory, power, spiritual body.
Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit." (written where?)
Lo! I tell you a mystery
We shall not all sleep - but we shall all be changed
At the last trumpet
Death is swallowed up in victory.
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain."

Ch 16: Contribution for the saints [in Jerusalem]
Going thru Macedonia to Corinth - stay in Ephesus until Pentecost
Timothy - doing work of the Lord
Apollos - urged him to visit with other brethren, not his will now.
Household of Stephanas first converts in Achaia - be subject to such
Stephanas, Fortunatus, Achaicus - rejoice at their coming, refreshed my spirit. Give recognition to such.
Churches of Asia send greeting.
Aquila and Prisca w/church that meets in their house
Ending -- signature, curse?, blessing.
