HEZEKIAH AND ISAIAH

By: Edith Shelton

Hezekiah began to reign in 3rd year of Hoshea, the last king of Israel, who reigned 9 years. So Hezekiah began to reign in Judah about 6 or 7 years before the fall of the northern kingdom. He was 25 years old and he reigned 29 years. Chronicles says he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord according to all that David his father had done. Kings says there was no king like him before or after him.

II Chron 29-31 In the first year of his reign, the first month, he opened the doors of the temple and repaired them; he called on the Levites to sanctify the temple and themselves because their fathers had forsaken God, and his wrath had come on Judah. Took 16 days to clean up the temple. Then Hezekiah brought animals for the priests to sacrifice -- whole assembly worshipped, singers sang, trumpets were blown, thank offerings and burnt offerings. The service of the Lord was restored. Hezekiah and the people rejoiced.

In the second month called on the people of Judah and Israel to come to the Passover. Some came from Israel; Judah "had one heart to do what the king... commanded..." Passover killed on 14th day, kept feast 7 days and another 7 days -- with gladness. Those from Israel went through Judah and broke down high places and altars in Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh. Then each went to his own home.

Hezekiah appointed priests and Levites to minister; called on people to bring in their tithes, which they did. Started 3rd mo, finished in 7th mo. "And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered."II

Kings 18. In the first part of his reign, probably when Shalmanezer was king of Assyria, Hezekiah rebelled against him and would not serve him. He also fought the Philistines. In the 4th year of Hezekiah, Shalmanezer besieged Samaria and took it in 3 years. The Israelites (northern kingdom) were deported "because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God..."

II K 18:13--20:1; II Chron 32; Isa 36--37. In the 14th year of Hezekiah, Sennacherib, then king of Assyria, marched against Judah and Jerusalem. Hezekiah gave him silver and gold when he took some of the fortified cities. Then he sent messengers and an army to Jerusalem and tried to frighten them into surrendering, saying that no other gods had saved the kings Assyria had attacked, and their God couldn't either. Hezekiah prayed, and he sent a message to Isaiah to seek an answer from God. God said He would save Jerusalem. Angel of the Lord killed 185,000 Assyrians, and Sennacherib returned to Nineveh. Later he was killed by two of his sons while worshipping in the temple of his god.

II K 20:1-11; II Chron 32:24; Isa 38. Hezekiah got sick and Isaiah came to tell him to put his house in order because he was going to die. Hezekiah prayed and God said He would heal him and add 15 years to his life. As a sign he made the sun dial go back ten steps.

II K 20:12-19; II Chron 32:31; Isa 39:1-8. King of Baby sent messenger with gifts because he had heard that Hezekiah was sick and had recovered. They came "to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land" (II Chron 32:31) Hezekiah showed them all his treasures. Later Isaiah asked him about the visit and told him that at a later date all the treasures he had showed them would be carried away to Babylon.

Isaiah 38:9-20. A prayer (almost like a psalm) by Hezekiah concerning his sickness and his recovery and praise to God. This is not recorded in Kings or Chronicles.

Manasseh son of Hezekiah, was 12 years old when he became king and reigned 55 years. Did evil in the sight of the Lord -- built high places, altars for Baal, worshipped the hosts of heaven, burned sons as offerings, did soothsaying, augury, sorcery, dealt with mediums and wizards. In Kings we read that God says through the prophets "Because Manasseh has committed these abominations...I am bringing on Jerusalem and Judah such evil that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle...I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down." In II Chron it says that God spoke to Manasseh but he would not listen. Commanders of the king of Assyria brought him to Babylon in chains. He humbled himself and prayed. God brought him back to Jerusalem and he knew the Lord was God. Built walls and gates, took away altars, restored tht temple worship and commanded Judah to serve the Lord.

Amon 22 years old, reigned 2 years--did evil, sacrificed to images Manasseh had made. Didn't humble himself as Manasseh had done. His servants conspired and killed him. People of the land killed those servants.
