There are two kinds of problems encountered in the sciences:
descriptive problems and explanatory problems.
Descriptive problems have the form: "What...?" or "How...?".
Explanatory problems have the form: "Why...?".
These two kinds of problems give rise to two phases of the
scientific method:
the descriptive phase and the explanatory phase.
